Futsal Overview Futsal is a format of five-a-side football that is played extensively throughout the world. The name 'Futsal' was chosen by FIFA when it took over as the governing body of the sport in 1989. The term Futsal is derived from the Spanish or Portuguese word for "football", FUTbol or FUTebol, and the French or Spanish word for "indoor", SALon or SALa.
The game is played on a court, with touchline boundaries, ranging in size from that of a standard basketball court to the full FIFA International size of 42 M x 25 M. The official ball is a special low bounce ball that is heavier and smaller than an official size 5 football. The ball forces a player to use their skill rather than the ball’s bounce to propel it. As a small sided game, players are constantly placed in situations where they must receive or play whilst under pressure or in confined spaces.
As a game it places considerable demand on technique, movement, tactical awareness and fitness.
Club Overview The Club runs various activities and programs throughout the year including the Friday Night League (FNL), MU Cup and the Titans Spring Cup. The Club’s top tier team currently plays in the V-League at Brunswick on Wednesday nights. The Friday Night League is open to all Club members. It is currently in its fifth season with matches on a Friday night on the Melbourne University Hockey Pitch. Matches are played on FIFA regulation Futsal sized courts with FIFA Futsal rules. Matches run from 4pm to 6:30pm, each match is played with two 18 minute halves with a 2 minute half time break. The MU Cup is a knockout style tournament and starts a few weeks into the FNL season. It is played on an indoor court located at University High School.
